Saxophonist Ben Waghorn is one of Bristol’s finest players with a national reputation, but was sadly absent from our last season’s programme due to a conflicting regular commitment – so we’re really pleased that we have managed to find a gap in his schedule, and this may well turn out to be your only chance to hear him at the club this season. Songbook is an outstanding date from a master who is still growing in control and expression. Now in 2022, it turns out that Andy Hague (drummer in Dave’s Quartet) has a great set of charts for a wide selection of Garrett’s tunes, including November 15 and Brother Hubbard from ‘Songbook’, and some favourite tunes from other albums including Boogety Boogety, Chief Blackwater, Native Tongue, and A Hole in One. Garrett explores ten originals in this album. That album featured Dave’s favourite pianist Kenny Kirkland, and so began the process of discovering Garrett’s other music, both older and newer. Pianist Dave Jones has long been a fan of the music of the great saxophonist/composer Kenny Garrett, particularly since hearing him on his late 1990s ‘Songbook’ album and live in London.
